The Social Network In The Form Of Wearable - "T-shirt"

In the earlier times it was very difficult to judge a person, find a person with whom you are compatible, understanding the body language and conversational variations. But now it can be done by just reading someone else's T-shirt.

A joint venture between design teams of MIT's Tangible Media Group and the Fluid Interface Group have assimilate the social network into a garment which signals to the other wearers your interest, associations and even if people are compatible organ donors.

Behind this project there is group of MIT students - Viirj Kan, Katsuya Fujii, Judith Amores and Chang Long Zhu Jin. They wanted to look at how social media worked outside the confines of the computer screen.

Kan said - "We wanted to examine more tangible ways of representing ourselves in social media". "While what you wear is very public, social media is able to show how you are to thousands more people and this creates really big social consequences but it often does not feel that way."

Kan told "Current technologies are very good at connecting people over great distances but they are not so good at connecting them in the same environment,". "There is gap and we wanted to explore that through what we have built".

There is a chic alphabet design on the front, T-shirt pattern is printed in thermo-chromatic ink with a thin circuit membrane under the weave. T-shirt uses Bluetooth to pair with your phone and all your critical data. After this the T-shirt has to detect another T-shirt within 12 feet of receiver in its collar and the wearer is alerted through a haptic motor which 'taps' the wearer alerting them to the fact that there is another wearable device present in the room.

With all of this social interaction, the experience is graded. After the T-shirt has alerted you to the fact there is another wearer in the room, capacitive sensors in the shirt read either a handshake, touch or high five before the T-shirt starts transmitting your data and you begin wearing your heart on your sleeve.

The group is working on the prototype which is yet to be tested on the users. The ability of the T-shirt to transmit data is only limited by the imagination of the designers.

People who are interested in finding like minded souls will be interested in using this clothing like groups finding their members in the industrial conferences.

The group is saying that they are still testing its capabilities and yet they don't know its limits. The shirts are still in research and development phase, sponsors are showing interests in the product.
