WhatsApp Or Facebook Messenger: Which One Is Good?

We all know Facebook bought WhatsApp for 19 billion dollars and its great for Mark Zuckerberg, he is now controlling 79% of the IM market with both applications and will continue to co-exist. At present on Google Play Store WhatsApp has 4.4 star ratings with 1 billion downloads whereas on the other hand Facebook Messenger has 3.9 star ratings with 500 million downloads. This data shows that which messenger is more popular and 70% of the users are using WhatsApp on daily basis.

WhatsApp Vs FB Messenger

As per the recent news Microsoft now owns Skype and other Tech giants like Google, Apple and Blackberry have their own IM offerings. Zuckerberg wants to be in top of the competition so he is now trying to make WhatsApp an application that supports phone calls as well. In this article, you are going to see the comparison between the two services: WhatsApp & Facebook - which one is better.

Facebook Messenger can be downloaded free from Google Play and App store but the application will ask your phone number for syncing your contacts just like WhatsApp. With this application you can access both your phone and Facebook contacts. If we talk about WhatsApp, it is also free but only for the first time afterwards the users will pay an annual subscription of 0.99 dollars. Its like you can pay this amount in advance also and since its an insignificant amount, the users won't feel extorted.

Growth Levels

Users don't like the design of WhatsApp, which looks outdated now, they want it to get overhaul in terms of UI, to get rid of the cheap looks. On the other hand if we talk about Facebook Messenger, it is modern, having an intuitive user interface and uses blue and white styling.

WhatsApp allows you to send images, videos audio files, to share your location and to send contact details to other WhatsApp contacts. In Facebook Messenger you can end audio files and images and you can search images on Bing to share them in chat.

Good About BOTH

With Facebook Messenger you can text non-Messenger friends using their phone number, send media including pictures, stickers and voice messages, continue chatting while in other apps via the use of Chat Heads, and share location information with your friends. Messenger also allows you to make free calls internationally to other friends using the service.

Whereas WhatsApp also allows you to send free instant messages to anyone you know with the app installed and you can chat with individuals or groups. You can send videos, pictures, voice messages and location data, and it also features some easy-to-use sharing features and has a huge array of emoticons to spice up your messages.

Bad About BOTH

There are also a lot of bugs still complicating things in Facebook Messenger, like internet connections that just won't connect (and thus make the app entirely useless as an instant messenger). You also can't fully disable notifications either. And being spammed to get your friends to join the service all the time is very annoying.

WhatsApp, while providing a good core service, is kind of light on extras. There's no voice calling (yet), moving stickers or mini games. As with Messenger, there is no option for video calling either. You can't log out of WhatsApp either because it uses your phone number, so you will always receive messages (but you don't appear as ''online'' until you enter the app).

WhatsApp & FB Messenger

Conclusion

Messenger and WhatsApp are used for the same purpose: to help people keep in touch with their friends. The applications are similar here and there, but as we already mentioned, WhatsApp has a few drawbacks and Facebook has to work hard to make it more visually attractive. Messenger has more to offer and it has more active users than WhatsApp, so there is a high chance to find out that many of your friends are using it too. Neither of these instant messengers are perfect, and both have spotty security histories. But both have a huge following and that is their strength – chances are that all of your friends are using either one or both of these services. While there are other, better-featured messenger apps available they simply do not have the same reach.

Do you use either or both of these services? Has Facebook's purchase of WhatsApp made you consider alternatives?
