Oculus Rift - Next Gen Virtual Reality
Have you heard about the Oculus Rift? that's obvious - it's a new virtual reality headset that let's players step inside their favorite games and virtual worlds. As we all know that in March 2014, Facebook Inc. buyed Oculus VR - maker of virtual reality wearables for $2 billion. Now Mark Zuckerberg is hardly trying to justify that deal. On April 14th 2015, Zuckerberg has started a Q&A on Facebook in which he said that "Facebook wants to give people the power to experience anything".
Mark Zuckerberg also wrote that, "Even if you don't have the ability to travel somewhere or to be with someone in person, or even if something is physically impossible to build in our analog world, the goal is to help build a medium that will give you the ability to do all of these things you might not otherwise be able to do". All this shows that the VR headset is going to be a very powerful communication tool which will expand the present media options of photos and videos.
Before some rumors came about Oculus Rift consumer version release date, it will be in CES 2015, but it didn't happen. Then again rumors came that it is going to released in October 2015. Recently the Oculus Rift founder and inventor Palmer Luckey said that the Oculus Rift release date might not arrive until 2016. He also said that lot of changes have been made to the product, after partnering with Facebook they have got a huge manpower of around 300 people to work on the project and complete it as soon as possible.
Obviously the Oculus Rift will get a tough competition from HTC Vive and Sony Project Morpheus. Microsoft has also announced HoloLense - a mixed reality headset technology. But still Luckey said that the VR headset will be the best at reasonable price, which means that Oculus Rift will be an amazing product. Let's have a look on it's specifications so far:
- It will have more than 1080p low persistence of vision OLED display.
- Wireless connectivity, its debatable currently.
- 7in display with 24 bit colour depth. There is a stereoscopic 3D used by 7in display which means that left eye sees extra space to the left and the right eye sees more to the right.
- Developer version of Oculus Rift weighs 379g, hope that this will be same for the consumer version or may be less then this.
- A motion tracking system is there which uses an external camera to track infrared dots located on the headset.
- Headset includes a 1000 Hz Adjacent Reality Tracker.
- Oculus Rift uses a combination of 3-axis gyros, accelerometers and magnetometers. We can expect DVI and HDMI inputs.
- USB interface for sending tracking data.
- Power adapter to connect the control box to a power outlet.
Company wants to give a all new world to its users, like at present we capture photos and videos, and share them on the web to make our friends experience too. Similarly making users to capture whole 3D scenes and create new environments, and then share those with people. Sounds interesting and pretty wild too.
Luckey added that they are going to keep the device as cheap as possible, that would be a major goal. It is expected between $200 - $400 price range.
All this is not yet confirmed, we are hearing from a long time about Oculus Rift that it is in development for years. But there is no confirmation about when the consumer model will be available or what it will cost.
